Diseases we track
Four outbreaks, one map. Cyclosporiasis leads — the others provide context on how different pathogens spread and where they hit hardest.
Cyclosporiasis
Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. In the US it spreads almost entirely through fresh produce — basil, cilantro, salad mixes, berries — contaminated with the parasite. Outbreaks recur every year and are widely under-recognized.
COVID-19
COVID-19 is a respiratory illness caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It spreads efficiently between people through respiratory droplets and aerosols and continues to circulate seasonally with new variants.
Ebola Virus Disease
Ebola Virus Disease is a rare but severe and often fatal illness. There is no endemic Ebola transmission in the United States — the US figures shown are the historical 2014 imported/treated cases. Ebola remains a serious concern for outbreak regions in Africa.
Hantavirus (HPS)
Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) is a rare but frequently fatal respiratory disease carried by wild rodents — chiefly the deer mouse. Cases in the US cluster heavily in the Southwest and the Four Corners region.
